Choose the correct form: The negotiations ______ for three days before an agreement was reached.
Answer: had lasted
The past perfect 'had lasted' shows an action completed before another past event (the agreement was reached).
Choose the word that best completes the sentence: The soldiers agreed to a ______, a temporary stop in the fighting, to allow aid to reach civilians.
Answer: ceasefire
A 'ceasefire' is a temporary halt in fighting; surrender means giving up, and invasion/conquest describe attacking, not stopping.
The diplomat said, "We will not use violence." Which sentence reports this correctly, with the tense shifted back?
Answer: The diplomat said they would not use violence.
With backshift, 'will' becomes 'would', and a modal is followed by the base form 'use', not 'used'. Unshifted 'will' is only possible if the promise still applies when reported.
Choose the most precise word: The two communities lived in peaceful ______ for decades, respecting each other's traditions.
Answer: coexistence
'Coexistence' means living together peacefully despite differences; the other words do not carry this meaning.
Choose the correct passive form: Thousands of homes ______ during the bombing.
Answer: were destroyed
The plural subject 'homes' needs 'were' + past participle 'destroyed' in the passive voice.
Which sentence uses the correct linking word to show contrast?
Answer: The talks failed; however, both sides kept hoping for peace.
'However' signals a contrast between the failure of the talks and the continued hope for peace.
