Sample questions on Ethics

Choose the word with the correct meaning: "Testing cosmetics on animals raises serious ___ concerns."

  • ethical
  • ethnic
  • aesthetic
  • athletic

Answer: ethical

"Ethical" relates to right and wrong; "ethnic" concerns cultural groups and "aesthetic" concerns beauty, both common confusions.

Choose the correct modal for advice: "Companies ___ be transparent about how they treat their employees."

  • can
  • might
  • should
  • could

Answer: should

"Should" expresses a moral obligation or strong recommendation, which suits an ethical argument better than the weaker "can", "might" or "could".

Which sentence correctly uses the third conditional to express regret about a past ethical choice?

  • If she tells the truth, she will feel better.
  • If she told the truth, she would feel better.
  • If she had told the truth, she would have felt better.
  • If she will tell the truth, she feels better.

Answer: If she had told the truth, she would have felt better.

The third conditional (if + past perfect, would have + past participle) describes an unreal past situation, as in "If she had told the truth, she would have felt better". "If she told the truth, she would feel better" is the second conditional and refers to the present.

Choose the best word: "The journalist was praised for her ___, refusing bribes and always reporting the truth."

  • integrity
  • curiosity
  • flexibility
  • creativity

Answer: integrity

"Integrity" means honesty and strong moral principles, the ethical quality described here.

Choose the correct opposite of "ethical" in the sentence "His behaviour was completely ___."

  • unethical
  • disethical
  • inethical
  • antiethical

Answer: unethical

The correct negative form is "unethical"; the prefixes "dis-", "in-" and "anti-" are not used with this adjective.

Choose the correct linking word: "The plan was profitable; ___, it was ethically questionable."

  • therefore
  • however
  • moreover
  • so

Answer: however

"However" signals a contrast between profitability and ethical concerns, whereas the other connectors add or draw a conclusion.
